Smart Art creates custom wallpaper, wall decor and printed surfaces from Cape Town for homes, designers and commercial spaces.
Theresa van Wyk started Smart Art in a garage. Eighteen years later it prints wallpaper and interior graphics for homes, offices and public spaces across Southern Africa.
She grew up in the Karoo, spent years in corporate London, and came back to South Africa wanting to put colour and a bit of storytelling back into interiors. That is still what the studio does: custom-made wallpaper, wood-plastic composite panels and eco-friendly printing, made to the wall it is going on rather than to a standard roll.
“Think it. We’ll print it” is less a slogan than how the work actually happens. A calming healthcare space, a bold corporate identity, a child’s room with something to look at. You bring the idea and we work out how to print it.
She keeps adding to it. Smart Art Kids and Smart Corporate Gifts both came out of the same studio. When she is not printing she is painting, travelling, or enjoying a good glass of Pinotage.
