William Morris

1834-1896 England Arts and Crafts

The founder of the Arts and Crafts movement, and still the most printed pattern designer in the world.

William Morris · printed by Smart Art

William Morris was a British designer, writer and socialist who spent his life arguing that ordinary things should be beautiful and well made. He founded the firm that became Morris & Co. in 1861, and the flat, dense, deeply observed botanical patterns it produced defined the Arts and Crafts movement.

He drew what grew around him: willow, jasmine, honeysuckle, marigold, strawberries and the birds that stole them. The patterns repeat, but they never resolve into a grid. That is why they still hold a wall today, more than a century after they were cut into pear-wood printing blocks.

Morris designed for the wall, not for the frame, so his work is at its best at the scale we print it. Every design here is out of copyright, which means you get a genuine Morris on your wall without a licence fee.
