Frans Smit

Frans Smit is a contemporary South African painter. He works thickly: portraits and still lifes built from loaded, gestural strokes, where a face gathers itself out of the paint and then comes apart again, and a vase of flowers turns into a heap of pure colour.

Smart Art collaborated with him on a deluxe collection of one-off wallpapers. Printed at wall scale, the brushwork stops being detail and becomes the subject: you can read every stroke from across the room.

Everything else on these pages is historical work in the public domain. This is not. It is living, licensed work, and it stays his.
